ABSTRACT

Xerostomia is a dry-mouth condition. Dry-mouth condition occurs when the average value of saliva secretion in a condition of non-stimulation is less than 0.15 ml/minute. This condition is caused by a disorder in saliva secretion. Xerostomia may result in decrease in life quality.
Currently acupuncture treatment is widely known and has played a great role in the field of medicine in general. In the field of dentistry the use of acupuncture is still limited. Acupuncture treatment is a theraphy using fine needles inserted into the body surface to stimulate a predetermined point. Acupuncture is carried out in xerostomia treatment at points on the head, arms, and feet.
Acupuncture treatment proves capable of increasing saliva secretion. Besides being sufficiently effective, treatment by acupuncture is also easy, safe, economical and does not bring about side effect. Acupuncture is strongly recommended as alternative theraphy in the field of dentistry.
